Después de haber cumplido con creces la sustitución de Ozzy Osbourne en Black Sabbath, Dio edita Holy Diver (1983), disco debut aún apreciado por piezas tales como: Holy Diver, Stand Up And Shout, Don't Talk To Strangers o Rainbow In The Dark. Es más, ha sido catalogado como el mejor trabajo en la carrera de este pequeño diablillo del Rock. 
Rainbow In The Dark podría ser calificada como la más accesible de todas las canciones de esta placa, la que según el mismo Ronnie James Dio, estuvo a punto de ser eliminada luego de darse cuenta que resultaba ser más Pop que Rock. A pesar de eso, terminó figurando en el Nº13 del Top 40 Greatest Metal Songs de VH1.
Y de que van las letras: Aunque muchos supongan que se refiere a la banda de Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow), de acuerdo con Dio, las letras están inspiradas en la tristeza que le trajo haber dejado Black Sabbath. También ha sido asociada (por algunos suspicaces) como una canción que habla de una persona homosexual (rainbow) queriendo salir del closet (dark) y sólo quedándose con las ganas por miedo a lo que vendrá.
