Annihilator - Bad Child

En un momento Jeff Waters (13 de febrero de 1966) lider de Annihilator se vio sin músicos ni compañeros para tocar sus canciones. Y como un Dave Mustaine cualquiera mandó a todos al infierno. Pero a diferencia del antes mencionado, Jeff se metió a grabar un nuevo disco tocando él mismo todos los instrumentos (menos la batería) sin extrañar a nadie, haciendo pensar a muchos:  ¿y como lo hará este tío en directo?

 

El disco King Of The Kill vio la luz en 1995 y no sólo la guitarra y bajo fueron tocados por Waters. También se hizo cargo de la voz de toda esta placa que a mi modo personal es un gran disco de Heavy Metal canadiense. Bien ejecutado, bien pesado, bien cantado, bien todo!! 

Uno de los buenos temas de este disco es Bad Child. Un gran ejemplo de lo que el Metal sin concesiones debería ser. Potente, rápido y atractivo a la vez. Y es que no hay que ser un genio para apreciar la calidad guitarrera de Waters, quien debería ser reconocido como uno de los mejores hachas en la historia del Metal. Y de que habla la canción: Un chico que tuvo que vivir el infierno para recién apreciar los consejos y amor de sus padres que siempre trataron de guiarlo por el buen camino. Ruta que a él nunca le pareció muy atractiva para tomar como opción y que ahora lo tiene perdido y arrepentido.

Annihilator - Brain Dance

Set The World On Fire es un disco que realmente me marcó y lo gocé muchísimo cada vez que lo llevé en mi personal stereo (o walkman para los siuticolovers) camino al colegio. Entre muchas de las canciones que disfruté de esa placa se encuentra mi queridísima Brain Dance.

Este tema es una muestra del ingenio de Jeff Waters, lider fundador y guitarrista de Annihilator,  al crear un tema que te hace pensar en Alicia en el Pais de las Maravillas por la voz alocada del genial cantante Aaron Randall, coros típicos de esas películas animadas y también por nombrar a Alicia al final.

Al parecer, este track es simplemente una canción hecha como broma y sin sentido. Son sólo las palabras de un loco rematado que no tienen nada que aportar. Sin embargo, la canción es rápida, potente y demasiado entretenida.

Annihilator - Shallow Grave

En una opinión muy, pero muy personal (para no herir susceptibilidades, que en el Metal hay demasiadas) creo que Jeff Waters, genio y creador de Annihilator, es a mi parecer el mejor guitarrista de todo el planeta. Pero pareciera que no mucha gente se da cuenta que es bueno o expresa que es al menos un artista decente. Ese debe ser el karma de esta banda que siempre ha quedado en un segundo plano. Y quizás sea porque Alice In Hell fue una obra maestra difícil de superar para algunos o porque el ego de Waters hace que cualquiera se olvide de su valía como hacha.

Esta vez vengo con un tema que podría estar dentro de lo mejor del repertorio de un grupo como AC/DC. Se llama Shallow Grave, apareció en el disco Carnival Diablos (2001) y fue al parecer compuesta en honor a estos legendarios australianos, heroes inmortales del Hard Rock. Y que bien canta el vocalista y que bien se presenta Jeff Waters en esta canción incluída en un disco también muy bueno, con una portada que más parece la entrega de una violenta banda Death Metal.

De que habla este imprescindible tema de mi colección musical: Pues siendo tan directos como sería AC/DC este tema nos cuenta la forma de pensar de alguien adicto a cierta cosa o persona que sólo le causa daño y que lo acabará en una hora, un día o quizás en 20 años más. Y nuestro protagonista hace una advertencia que debe tomarse con cuidado, y es que cuando él caiga... todos caerán con él también.

Annihilator - Set The World On Fire

Set The World On Fire (1993) fue la canción que me introdujo a la música de Annihilator. Esto, hace muchos años escuchando el programa Al Filo del Acero por la Radio de la Universidad del Bío Bío. Todavía recuerdo como ponía esta política canción a todo volumen, que comienza con una intro bastante cool y aviones bombardeando algo.

Y de que trata este buenísimo tema: Pues habla de un hombre que por medio de las armas toma el control quizás de una nación donde impone un nuevo régimen antidemócratico y opresivo. Él logra controlarlo todo causando el horror y el miedo por medio de la exterminación de los que no están con él o de quienes no saben cúal es el lado correcto. Asimismo, los que son sus ciegos y fieles seguidores sabrán que estarán protegidos bajo su ala.

También se puede apreciar en la letras como un pueblo se lamenta por estar bajo una dictadura que sólo trajo dolor, muerte y división entre hermanos. Pero luego aparece el momento en que este supuesto lider también debe enfrentar la muerte a la que a muchos llevó impunemente. Sin embargo, este sujeto no termina recordado como el salvador que creyó ser. Sólo es recordado con verguenza y repudio por un pueblo que ahora libre, puede respirar sabiendo que se está quemando en el Infierno. Una eternidad en un lugar que no podrá tomar de Golpe porque ahí manda alguien casi tan miserable como él pero mucho más fuerte y astuto.

Annihilator - Phoenix Rising

Podría resultar un poco extraño, no soy fanático de Annihilator y nunca he escuchado sus discos más de dos veces. Pero puedo decir que el álbum Set The World On Fire editado en 1993 es uno de mis discos de toda la vida. Quizás el cambio a un sonido más clásico y la incorporación de un vocalista más accesible fueron los detonantes para que asi resultara.

Phoenix Rising, asi como Snake In The Grass, es una de las tantas canciones favoritas que encuentro en este disco, el que a mi parecer también tomó la ruta a la Metallica. Pero aquellos dos años de diferencia se transformaron en algo nada nuevo que ofrecer a las nuevas generaciones inmersas en los sonidos de Seattle. En fin, Phoenix Rising es una especie de balada que sin duda pudo haber estado en los rankings por toda su instrumentalización y sincera entrega más allá de crear una balada porque sí.

Y de que habla: Según Jeff Waters, este tema fue compuesto en honor a una pariente que falleció y a la que amaba demasiado. Sus letras hablan del profundo mensaje de tener en nuestra memoria a todos nuestros seres queridos que ya se han ido, y también creer que en el más allá nos volveremos a encontrar con ellos, luego de volver a nacer como el mítico Ave Fénix.

Annihilator - Snake In The Grass

Jeff Waters (n. 13 de Febrero de 1966) es el guitarrista y compositor canadiense creador de la banda Thrash, Annihilator. Aunque decirle banda resulta algo extraño, ya que este músico cambia los integrantes tanto como uno podría llegar a pestañear en el día. Pero bueno, en 1993 Waters se dió la maña para sacar un disco bastante más accesible bajo el nombre de Set The World On Fire. Aqui aparecería Snake In The Grass, una canción bastante especial que habrá servido de desahogo a más de alguno.

Snake In The Grass es un tema que habla de una mujer infiel. Con un comienzo muy tranquilo y romántico, él le dice a esta chica que ella era su mundo y le expresa todo lo que habría hecho por ella si no lo hubiera engañado. Luego, súbitamente se dará paso a las guitarras y este hombre explotará sacando a la luz toda su rabia y dolor en contra de esta infeliz que se rió de sus sentimientos y que ahora ni siquiera es capaz de mirarlo a los ojos.

Entonces él continuará: no fui lo suficientemente bueno para ti, quizás tú no lo fuiste para mí. Estuve hasta el cogote con tus mentiras y recién vengo a darme cuenta de las cosas, sobretodo que estaré mejor sin ti. Asi que no llores, no sigas mintiendo justo ahora que tengo la sárten por el mango. Y ya que eres sólo una gran desgracia, mejor da la vuelta y sal de mi vista, puesto que no tienes ni siquiera un mínimo de clase, sólo eres un reptil, una serpiente en el pasto!
